| Me and Caleb, by Franklyn E. Meyer, © 1962, was followed by the aptly titled, Me and Caleb Again © 1969. Both are timeless pieces of classic American literature, and Me and Caleb won the prestigious Charles W. Follett Award for outstanding children's literature in 1962. These books went through seven printings and have been fixtures in homes, schools, and libraries for over 40 years. Both are charming and humorous books excellent for children ages 8 and over. They are also excellent “read-aloud” books for parents to use with children as young as six. Each book is told through the perspective of the older brother Bud, (the 'Me"), and moves along through a year of the Wallings family’s life. The date is never specified, however the period is late Fifties/early Sixties, before air-conditioning, color TV, microwave ovens, and other modern conveniences. This is part of the timeless appeal of the books and enables children to see a period in American life that was part of their parents or grandparents age. Me and Caleb Again takes over where Me and Caleb left off with each chapter moving month-by-month through the course of a year as the boys share adventures and experiences of family, fun, honor, and courage. The stories are laugh out loud funny and children have no problem relating to the boys’ hi-jinks and adventures. A perfect addition to any home library! Both books have the rich, original illustrations by the original artists. |
