| In 2005 I attended a book fair at our children's school and my eyes lighted upon an old copy of Me and Caleb Again. Something stirred deep in my memories that reminded me that this book was incredibly funny, and so I quickly picked up the book. I couldn't recall the specific details of the book as it had been over 35 years since I had last read it, but I knew that it was one of my childhood favorites. I promptly bought the book and brought it home for my 10 year old daughter to read. Unfortunately, anything that Dad recommended couldn't be any good so Me and Caleb Again sat unread on the bookshelf for almost a year. Finally on a cold winter morning in February 2006 our ten year old daughter Caitlin decided to pick up the book and start reading. All of a sudden I started to hear giggling coming from the green chair in the sun room. Soon I heard outright laughter. Next I witnessed her reading passages to her younger brothers who also laughed. She then finished reading the book and told me that it was the funniest book she'd ever read. I remarked that I thought there was another book, entitled Me and Caleb which obviously was set before Me and Caleb Again. I suggested that we try to find it to buy. Unfortunately it was out of print and unavailable from bookstores. I was only able to secure a vintage copy for an exorbitant price on ebay. When that copy of Me and Caleb arrived at our door, my daughter tore open the box and read it cover-to-cover. She then proclaimed it to be the funniest book that she'd ever read! My boys, (ages 6 and 8) then begged me to read them Me and Caleb, which I did a chapter at a time each night. I watched as they giggled over and delighted in the antics of Bud and Caleb in each chapter and I was amused how, as each night when we finished a chapter they would beg me to keep reading! My daughter who'd already read both books, curled up next to us and listened each night as well. At this point, I realized the timelessness of these books. After we'd finished Me and Caleb, we left for a vacation to Florida, and my boys insisted that we bring Me and Caleb Again with us to read at bedtime each night! We did, and I was amazed to see them ask to come in from the beach to read the chapters! Now I started to wonder how I could get these books back in print and make them widely available to kids everywhere. My first effort was to locate the author, Franklyn E. Meyer. I was amused to learn that we had been just a tad bit south of him while in Florida on vacation. (Click here to read more about Franklyn Meyer.) After we met, things started to "snowball" and after a lot of fun work and early morning hours, Hester Publishing was born. Please order Me and Caleb, Me and Caleb Again, and now More Me and Caleb Again. Sincerely, Jim Hester |
